Main points first
The name says twin, and the official wording varies. The Bali provincial portal says Banyumala has three water drop formations, with the biggest in the middle and smaller ones on the left and the right, above a natural pool.2 The tourism ministry's Indonesian page describes the same three formations.3
In a separate article about Buleleng the ministry writes in English that two waterfalls gracefully drop into a serene pool that is perfect for a peaceful swim.5 The two counts are less of a contradiction than they look, because the ministry's Indonesian page calls the left and right streams small and the middle one the largest, so a photographer can reasonably count two or three.
Whichever number you take, the shape is the same: a broad rock face, a central fall and a pool at its foot. Tibumana, a different fall on the Ubud side, was also once called the Twin Waterfalls by locals before the community stopped the left flow.6 Do not mix the two up on a map. Love Bali also lists a different twin waterfall, Campuhan, at Gitgit, named for the meeting of two rivers, and it is not Banyumala.7 Check the village name before you book a driver.

Banyumala is in Wanagiri village in Sukasada district, Buleleng Regency, on the northern slopes of the island.1 The ministry places it in Wanagiri in Buleleng and says its pool is safe for swimming.3
By the car routing of the OpenStreetMap project, free of traffic, the drive from the Ubud Palace area is about 56.5 km and 58 minutes.4 Gitgit is about 59.2 km and 53 minutes and Ulun Danu Beratan about 43.9 km and 41 minutes by the same routing.8,9
Listings give longer figures because they count the road as people use it. The Banyumala day with a lake temple, a gate and a swing lists a transfer of 2 hours each way, and that is the number to build your day on. The same listing offers Wanagiri Hidden Hill with a jungle swing as its last stop before the drive home, which is a useful reminder that the village is a viewpoint area as well as a waterfall one. Banyumala Waterfall travel time from Ubud is the figure to build the day on, and the listing's own transfer is the one to trust.
Banyumala is a short walk, but it is a walk. One day tour that stops there says it takes about 15 minutes down to the waterfall from the car park, that the way is slippery, and that you should bring swimwear, a towel and spare clothes if you want to bathe.
The pool is the reason to come. The ministry says the natural pool below the falls is safe for swimming.3 The Love Bali page, however, lists no entry fee and no hours, and the figures that blogs quote differ from one another, so treat anything you read about a gate price as a number to confirm at the car park.
As elsewhere on the island, the managers set the rules on the day. Ask whether swimming is open before you change, and keep your valuables in the car or with the guide, and watch the edge of the pool, where the rock is wet. After heavy rain the water can run brown and fast, and a fall that looked gentle in photographs may not be a place for the pool.

Several listings include Banyumala, and each wraps it in different company. One North Bali day lists Lake Beratan for 40 minutes, Handara Gate for 40 minutes, Banyumala for 1.5 hours with swimming and Wanagiri Hidden Hill with a jungle swing for 40 minutes, with a 2-hour transfer each way.
Another day starts at Lovina Beach for dolphin watching and adds Banyumala for 1.5 hours with a walk and swimming, then Ulun Danu Bratan Temple for 1 hour; it lists 7 to 10 hours. A third, in Munduk, starts with a Twin Lake viewpoint and a 2-hour jungle hike and reaches Banyumala for 1.5 hours.
A private day pairs Sekumpul, Banyumala and the Jatiluwih rice terraces over 8.5 hours, with a 2-hour drive out and 1 hour back. The prices start at $32, $31, $21 and $31.

Sekumpul and Banyumala are neighbours on the map: the routing gives about 23.3 km and 38 minutes between them.11 One private listing joins both with the Jatiluwih terraces in a single day. That is an ambitious plan, because Sekumpul is a walk of about 300 m with roughly 365 steps.12 Doing both in one day leaves little room for a long swim at either, and the listing is best read as a sampler.
A calmer pairing is the lake temple. Ulun Danu Beratan, on Lake Beratan in Tabanan, was founded in 1634, and visitors wear temple dress or a sash provided by the management at the entrance.13,14 Listings that include Banyumala often add it on the same road, which makes the temple the easiest add-on of the day. Allow time for the dress rules at the entrance and for the lake edge, where the temple towers reflect in the water when the lake is high.
If you only want one waterfall in the north, make it the one that matches your appetite. Banyumala is the easy swim, and Sekumpul is the long walk, and the north-coast road to either is the same long climb out of Ubud. Pick the day that gives you the longest time at the water, and read the table above for the hours each listing allows. Ubud to Banyumala Waterfall drive time is similar to the drive to Gitgit on the same routing.4,8

Before you go
The north is cooler than the coast. One Banyumala listing expects cool temperatures in the northern highlands and suggests a light jacket, and warns that North Bali weather can turn with sudden showers. A Munduk hike goes ahead in light rain but may be moved in severe weather.
The seasons matter here too. The tourism ministry's calendar for most of Indonesia, Bali included, runs dry from April through October and wet from November through March, and it adds that the seasons have grown less predictable.15,16 The dry months suit a swim best, and in the wet months a Banyumala visit becomes a question of paths and safety before it is a question of swimming.
For the 2026 and 2027 wet season, BMKG forecast that most of Bali enters the rainy season in December 2026, with the peak in February 2027 for most of the island.17,18 The rainy-season page in this guide explains what that does to waterfall colour and paths.
