Main points first
The provincial tourism office places Tegenungan Waterfall in Tegenungan Village, Sukawati District, Gianyar Regency, and says it lies just about 10 kilometers outside Ubud, next to the village that gives it its name.1,2 The Love Bali portal of the Bali government adds that the same place is called the Kemenuh waterfall, after Kemenuh village in the same district.7 Expect to meet both names on road signs and in booking confirmations.
What sets it apart is the setting. A Bali culture portal points out that waterfalls on the island are typically found in highlands, while this one is a lowland fall.8 The stream splits two Gianyar villages: Banjar Tegenungan in Kemenuh village on one bank and Banjar Blangsinga in Saba village on the other.9 Downstream detikBali lists a neighbouring cascade, the Blangsinga waterfall, as a separate stop.10 The country around you feels like farmland and village lanes rather than mountain forest.
The same portal gives the height as roughly 10 to 15 meters, pouring into a natural pool.11 That is a modest drop next to the great falls of the north, and it is worth saying so before you arrive. Tegenungan earns its place by being easy to reach, broad and photogenic, with greenery on both sides, and by being a place where you can get in the water in a spot meant for it. This page covers Tegenungan Waterfall in Bali From the ticket booth to the stairs, in the order you meet them.

The only way to the water is on foot. The Bali culture portal counts around 167 steps down to the river that carries the fall, with several photo spots along the way.3 A descent of that size is easy on the way down and a genuine climb on the way back, so plan the return as part of the visit rather than an afterthought. Take a bottle of water, keep your hands free for the handrail and avoid new sandals with smooth soles.
The Love Bali portal describes the area around the falls as very cool because shady trees surround it, from bushes and branching trees to coconut palms.14 That shade is the reason the steps feel kinder than the number suggests. The same culture portal notes that river club recreation areas near the waterfall let you swim by the edge of the cascading water, and that swimming is permitted within designated areas despite the strong flow.15,12 Read that as a rule: stay inside the marked zone.
There is also something to look at above the water. The portal mentions what it calls the first glass bridge in Indonesia and the longest in Southeast Asia.16 ANTARA, reporting from the site, mentioned a swimming pool and selfie spots as part of the facilities.17 If you came for the cascade alone, you can ignore all of it and still have a good hour; if you came with friends who want the photographs, the extras give them something to do while you swim.
Tegenungan is run by the local customary village, the desa adat, which employs 70 workers, all of them residents, according to ANTARA.22 When the manager spoke to ANTARA in February 2022, entry was Rp10,000 for domestic visitors and Rp20,000 for foreigners, with free entry for residents of Sukawati village.20 Those are the numbers from a pandemic year, and they are the oldest line in the table below.
In November 2024 detikBali listed these tickets: the main entry at Rp20,000 per person, a separate Rp20,000 per person to go up to the top level, and Rp5,000 per car for parking.4 The same article reminds readers that fees, hours and travel times can differ depending on repairs by the managers and on how fast you drive.23 Take both figures as a range of what the gate has asked, not as a quote for today. Carry small notes in rupiah and pay at the booth.
The practical rule is to budget for the entry, the upper-level ticket if you want it, and parking, and to treat anything printed here as a starting point. Prices on a tour listing are different: the site tour starts at $14 for a whole private day, and its listing does not break out the fees of each stop. If you go by yourself, expect to pay at the booth; if you book a private day with a driver, ask what the driver covers before you go. Answers about the Tegenungan Waterfall entrance fee come with a date attached here, because the managers change the figure.

From the Ubud Palace area the car route runs about 11.6 km and 11 minutes in free-flowing conditions, according to the OpenStreetMap project routing.6 That is a computed figure with no traffic, no parking search and no stop, so a real afternoon takes longer. For comparison, detikBali puts the trip from Denpasar at about 36 minutes and the culture portal says 30 to 45 minutes, about 20 kilometers away.35,36
The way is signposted. The provincial tourism office says road signs with a photo, the waterfall name and an arrow point the right way, and that Google Maps works just as well.37 Since villages on both banks share the stream, make sure the pin you follow ends at the Tegenungan side if you want the main entrance, because detikBali lists the Blangsinga waterfall as its own stop with its own Rp10,000 ticket.10
The falls often sit inside a longer day out. ANTARA records that the falls were part of tour packages together with the Barong and Kecak show at Batubulan, Kintamani, Tegallalang Rice Terrace and the Monkey Forest.17 One listing in our comparison below lists Tegenungan first and then Kanto Lampo, Tegallalang and Saraswati Temple on a private day from Canggu. The other lists it among four stops on an eight-hour day.

Attendance is worth knowing before you pick a day. Before the pandemic the operations manager told ANTARA that between 700 and 1,000 visitors came every day.18 In February 2022 he put weekdays at about 40 visitors, with hundreds of domestic visitors on weekends.19 Both figures are old, and attendance has no reason to stay frozen, but they show the pattern: a weekday and a weekend are very different places.
The gate opens at 06:30, detikBali says, and closes at 18:30.5 If the cascade matters more to you than the crowd, the first hour after opening and the late afternoon are the quiet ends of that window. The site tour listing recommends starting earlier to avoid crowds at its own stops, a line that applies in spirit here as well. The Bali culture portal also notes that the falls can be visited all year.38
Weekends belong to domestic visitors and families, and the water is full of children. If you want a photograph with no one in it, pick a weekday. If you want a lively day with food stalls and music from the river clubs, a weekend works. Either way, keep your valuables in a bag you can zip, stay in the marked swim area and respect the people who come here to pray.

The Bali culture portal names the dry season, April to September, as the ideal time, and says that in the rainy season the cascade can become more intense and overflow after heavy rain.38 A fuller fall looks better in a photograph and is harder to approach, so on a wet day treat the steps and the river edge with extra care and stay out of the water if it is running hard.
Rain also changes the color. The site tour listing says waterfalls can look brown after rain and that some stops may be adjusted for safety. That is a statement about that tour, not about Tegenungan alone, but the lowland stream here collects the water of the villages upstream, so the logic carries over. With only one free day in the wet months, pick a morning and check the sky before you commit.
There is no rule that says the falls are closed when the weather is poor, but the staff will decide on the day. Bring a dry shirt, leave electronics in a waterproof pouch and expect the stairs to be slippery. Come back on a clear morning if the first visit is washed out; with the town of Ubud only 11 minutes away on the route engine, a second try costs you very little.6
A Beji Temple stands near the waterfall, says the Bali culture portal.13 A beji is a temple of holy water, and its presence is a reminder that this water belongs to a community. ANTARA mentions Pura Pancoran 11 in the same area, which residents use for melukat purification ceremonies, and a pancoran spout whose water is used for drinking by the neighbours.39
The management is local too. The desa adat runs the site under a company set up for it and employs 70 residents.22 The entry money therefore goes to the village, which is one reason to pay the gate rather than slip past it. Ask before you photograph anyone praying and keep voices down near the shrine.
Dress for both worlds: swimwear in the pool zone and a sarong or covered shoulders if you enter any temple area. Do not step on offerings and never place your things on a shrine wall. A courteous visit costs nothing and makes the day better for everyone who lives here.
