1How far will you travel for a waterfall?

Waterfalls in Bali cluster in two places: the countryside around Ubud and the northern slopes of Buleleng. This guide sorts them by drive, by walk, by swim and by season, using government pages instead of rankings.

Where Bali keeps its waterfalls

Waterfalls are not spread evenly over Bali. The tourism ministry says most of the island's waterfalls are concentrated in Buleleng, the northern regency, and that nearly 90% of its tourist destinations centre on them.5 That is why a search for Bali waterfalls keeps returning names from the north coast side of the mountains.

The second cluster is the countryside around Ubud, where Gianyar and Bangli hold the falls that day tours chain together. Tegenungan sits in Kemenuh village in Sukawati district, and Kanto Lampo is in Beng village, both in Gianyar.1,2 Tibumana is in Apuan village in Susut district, Bangli, and Tukad Cepung is at Tembuku, also Bangli.3,4

A third group sits in between, in the cool uplands of Badung and Tabanan. Nungnung is at Pelaga village in Petang district, Badung, and Leke Leke is at Mekarsari village in Baturiti, Tabanan.10,11 Knowing which cluster a fall belongs to tells you how long the road will be before you have chosen anything else. A traveller based in Ubud can reach the first group on a short drive, while the northern group means a day built around the road.

Four falls an easy drive from Ubud

The Ubud cluster is the one you can fit around a normal day. By the car routing of the OpenStreetMap project, free of traffic, Tegenungan and Kanto Lampo are each about 11 minutes from the Ubud Palace area, Tibumana is about 17 minutes and Tukad Cepung about 32 minutes.12,13,14,15 Real roads with scooters and tour vans take longer, so treat those as a floor.

The falls differ in character more than in distance. Tukad Cepung is hidden in a stone cave and takes a trek of about 20 minutes to reach, and the ministry describes the 15 m curtain of water as lit from above.19,20 Kanto Lampo is a terraced fall, and the official site describes gentle cascades with a short scenic walk to the water.21

Tegenungan is the lowland one, in the words of a Bali cultural site, unlike the typical highland waterfall.22 It is also the one with the most infrastructure, which suits a short stop and does not suit anyone who wants quiet. Each of these four gets its own page in this guide, with the walk, the fee and the swimming rules, so this page only has to help you decide which of them deserves your morning.

Heights as stated

  • Nungnung50 m
  • Pujungan50 m
  • Gitgit35 m
  • Dusun Kuning25 m
  • Tukad Cepung15 m
  • Kanto Lampo15 m

Each figure is the height that one page gives and none is a survey; Les is stated as about 30 to 35 m and is left out.23,8,24,7,25,19,26

The north: Sekumpul, Gitgit and Banyumala

The northern falls ask for a longer day. Sekumpul is the group of seven falls fed by upland streams, and the Bali provincial portal says they are considered the most beautiful on the island.6 The ministry adds that green rock cliffs of 100 to 150 m surround them, and that the way in is about 300 m through forest with roughly 365 concrete steps.33,32

Gitgit is in Gitgit village, Sukasada district, 11 km south of Singaraja, and it is the fall that most north coast road trips pass.30 Banyumala is in Wanagiri, also in Sukasada, and the ministry says it has three water drops, the biggest in the middle, over a natural pool that is safe for swimming.34,31

From the Ubud Palace area the routing gives about 56.5 km and 58 minutes to Banyumala, about 59.2 km and 53 minutes to Gitgit and about 66.9 km and 69 minutes to Sekumpul, all without traffic.17,35,18 The tour listings that include these falls quote far longer transfers, which the Sekumpul page sets side by side. Of the best waterfalls in Bali for a calm pool, Banyumala is the one the ministry describes as safe for swimming.31

Which fall is the tallest? The sources disagree

A search for the tallest waterfall in Bali gets different answers from different official pages. Love Bali, the provincial government's portal, gives Gitgit a height of 35 m and calls it the highest on the island.7 The ministry gives Nungnung 50 m and says it is often named among the tallest in Bali.8

Love Bali's own page for Pujungan in Tabanan reaches 50 m as well, and it gives Les, in Tejakula, about 30 to 35 m and Dusun Kuning in Bangli about 25 m.24,23,25 The two pages by the same government therefore do not agree on a single tallest fall, and neither is a measured survey.

The practical reading is simple. Height is a poor way to choose, because a 15 m curtain in a cave can be more memorable than a 50 m fall seen from far away.19,8 Choose by the walk, the pool and the road, and use the table below for the figures as each page states them.

Swim, paddle or only look

Not every pool is for swimming. The ministry says the natural pool below Banyumala is safe for swimming, and that at Sekumpul visitors can swim in the pool where the water lands.31,33 At Nungnung, by contrast, Love Bali says the water is a little rough for swimming.29

Rules differ fall by fall. At Tibumana the house rules on one cultural site say do not swim too far, do not enter caves, do not swim under the waterfall and avoid standing near cliffs.36 Tegenungan allows swimming within designated areas despite the strong flow.37 Read the signs at the gate, since managers change them.

For something more active, the ministry describes Aling-Aling in Buleleng as the fall where visitors slide down natural rock formations into the pool.38 That is a different afternoon from a photo stop, and a different kit list: shoes with grip, swimwear and a dry change. It also changes who should come, since small children and anyone nervous on wet rock are better served by a pool with a calm edge than by a slide.

When to go, and how to see several in one day

For most of the country, Java and Bali included, the tourism ministry's calendar puts the dry months from April through October and the wet ones from November through March.9 It also says the seasons are harder to predict now.39 The dry months give clearer water, and the rainy months give fuller falls, which the rainy-season page of this guide explains in detail. If your dates are fixed and fall in the wet months, favour the falls with a short walk and an easy path, and keep a spare hour in the day for a stop that closes for safety.

If you do not want to drive yourself, a private day from Ubud covers the nearest falls with a guide. The listing offers a 6-hour option with up to 3 attractions or a full day of 8 to 10 hours, and its stops are Tegallalang, Tirta Empul, Tukad Cepung, Kanto Lampo plus Tibumana. It starts from $14 and has 6,668 reviews with a rating of 4.96.

For the north, the same platform lists a small-group day to Sekumpul and two temples from $32, and a day that includes Banyumala from $32. The quiz at the top of this page picks between them in two taps, and the calculator below adds up a group.
